Jon Bonné:
"A week, a month, a summer of Riesling"
--- SF Chronicle
"Weller-Lehnert is
one of
the best small producers in Piesport."
--- Restaurant

"The amphitheater
of the Goldtröpfchen vineyard is one of the greatest sites in the Middle Mosel,
producing Rieslings with baroque fruit aromas and a firm
natural sweetness to balance."
--- Clarke & Spurier's Fine
Wine Guide, The ultimate reference to the world's best wines.
"Fine Mosels are light, lovely,
poetic, and very, very seductive.
A first rate Mosel has a pale
platinum color with a tint of green, an expansive flowery scent
and a soft, juicy-ripe flavor balanced by a refreshing acidity
and a delicate 'spritz'.
Such a lyrical mouthful will banish
anyone's doubts that a wine can legitimately be called 'charming'.

Weller-Lehnert
Mosel Riesling
Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Vineyard
Hand-crafted & Hand-selected by JK Imports
(*) estate bottled | NO sweet reserve | 100% mosel riesling | single vineyard (cru) |
single cask (Fuder) / single lot = 1,440 bottles/Fuder bottling
The
classic vineyards of Piesport have been surrounded by a lake
of insipid wines since the 1971 German Wine Law allowed this
name to be used for regional bottlings with none of the quality
or character of the best sites. If you find wines labeled 'Piesporter
Goldtröpfchen' ('Michelsberg' is NOT a name of a single
vineyard; wine bottled under that name might not even be from
Piesport at all), you still have a chance of finding some top-quality
riesling, especially if it is made by one of the better estates.
Weller-Lehnert is one of these, and its rieslings are proof that
fine wines are still being made in Piesport.
The Weller-Lehnert estate
has been in the hands of the same family for eight generations.
Current proprietor Petra Hain-Matheus is the grand-daughter of
Peter Weller, who managed the estate from 1935 to '71; her father,
Karl Hain (Peter's son-in-law), was at the helm through '91, after
which Petra began to take control. She married Jörg Matheus,
a graduate of Geisenheim, in 1992, and he became the cellar master
at the estate.
Of the 13.6 acres of vineyard,
4.5 are in the Goldtröpfchen, and all the Goldtröpfchen
is riesling. In most vintages, the total
production is 50,000 bottles, of which the proprietors select about
35,000 to bottle under the estate label. The style is fruity rather
than dry (the fermentation is stopped, as the policy of the estate
is not to add suessreserve to a dry wine). Weller-Lehnert's
Goldtröpfchens demonstrate this style with plentiful,
distinctive fruit. It's light and floral in the Kabinetts; fuller,
with lovely tart red currant tones in the Spätleses; and super-ripe,
tending toward apricot, in the classic weighty Ausleses.
It's
a pleasure to taste the real thing from Piesport!
